By the numbers coral reefs harbour roughly twenty five percent of all marine species. Live coral cover has declined dramatically in recent decades and in many regions it is down by about fifty percent since the mid twentieth century. The frequency and severity of mass bleaching events have increased several fold since the 1980s and many reef systems are now at tipping points where recovery becomes far less likely without urgent action. When reefs fade biodiversity collapses, food resources shrink and coastal communities become more vulnerable. Protecting reefs is not a luxury but an investment in the future of people and the planet.
